I totally agree this is not ab...Great stuff Colin. I totally agree this is not about heaven and hell, and we shouldn't try to understand the mechanics of the afterlife from stories such as these. It is so obviously a parable not literal description! Rob Bell talks about this story and adds some symbolism about the rich man being dead before he dies. Dead in his heart. Dead to the needs of others. As opposed to 'eternal' life which may well refer to an everlasting fullness of life starting in the here and now.
